Idea Montagna "Appennino di neve e di ghiaccio vol. 2" is a mountaineering guide dedicated to the routes of the Apennines. The second volume continues and concludes with the description of the existing snow and ice routes along the Apennine ridge between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, on the eastern side. The work includes the Giovo-Rondinaio, Alpe delle Tre Potenze, Monte Gomito, Monte Cimone, Libro Aperto, Monte Spigolino, Monte Corno alle Scale groups, describing 99 winter mountaineering routes.
In winter, the Apennines transform into an ideal playground for activities ranging from ski mountaineering to dry tooling, through various intermediate shades. In fact, when in the cold season the steep grassy or mixed terrain of the Apennines is covered with snow and the shaky rocks are held together by frost, it gains greater stability that allows for numerous climbing possibilities. The couloirs, natural lines that cut through the major walls, were the first to be ascended, but under particular conditions, the snowfall allows for climbing a wide variety of routes, systematically explored only in recent years. The Apennines thus prove to be not only an excellent training ground for snow and ice mountaineering to be practiced on major mountain ranges but increasingly become a place to express specific, rewarding, and high-level mountaineering.
