Idea Montagna "Ski Mountaineering in the Southern Orobie" is a ski mountaineering guide dedicated to the Orobie, mountains that have been skied since forever, practically since the introduction of skis in Italy. Even before tourism, the inhabitants of the Bergamasque valleys traversed them with cross-country skis. The origins of ski mountaineering in these areas, as well as up until the seventies and even the eighties, involved narrow skis. The reasons for this approach are historical even before they are orographic, stemming from a combination of factors: a strong contribution of personnel to the alpine troops, with related training in skiing as a means of transport; the allure of sports centers of military corps as a profession; the poor suitability of the terrain for the development of alpine skiing; and the scarcity of economic resources in the area caused by the emigration of the workforce towards the industrial economy of the plain – Milan is nearby.
