Climbing
It has been 13 years since the advent of the best-seller GRIPMASTER, the finger/forearm trainer with individual finger reinforcement that you will find at the checkouts and in the climbing backpacks of, well, most climbers. Now it receives an update even more in line with the needs of us climbers: the PROHANDS PRO ($21.95, prohands.net), available in three tensions: Medium (7lbs); Heavy (9lbs); and Extra Heavy (11lbs). Based on the Gripmaster model, the Pro adds a wider profile, an ergonomic palm bar, and durable steel springs. The device is fun, and the pump is more wicked than Skeletor; I used my Heavy for mega post-training workouts and to warm up on the cold cliffs of October.
Urban Climber
Heading down the boulevard from El Paso to Hueco Tanks, a car full of enthusiastic climbers warms up their fingers with the Gripmaster Pro. It is a medium tension grip equivalent to 7lbs of tension. It is tough, no doubt, but a slight squeeze does the trick to get the energy flowing. The Extra Heavy, shown here, is in the glove compartment. That comes next. It is a different kind of monster. With 11lbs of tension, it is capable of building steel hands, wrists, and forearms. This is not warming up or the act of opening, that is for sure... unless you are Fred Nicole.
