Versante Sud Light Mountaineering in Trentino-Südtirol vol.1 is a dream book for those who love summit ascents: 283 routes have been selected from the most beautiful and impressive peaks of 43 mountain groups, divided into two volumes. The first volume is dedicated to the western valleys and describes 133 selected ascents from 19 mountain groups west of the Adige valley: Sesvenna Group, Venosta Alps and Passiria, Tessa Group, Western Brenta Alps, Sarentino Mountains, Ortles Group, Gavia Group, Cevedale Group, Maddalene Chain, Mendola Chain, Adamello Group, Presanella Group, Brenta Group, Cadria Group, Garda Mountains, Brescian Dolomites, Tremalzo Group, Monte Baldo Group, and Pizzocolo.
All the described routes have been selected for their beautiful views and their difficulty. Few routes offer climbing difficulties above grade II, but not all ascents are simple hikes: some require a good knowledge of glacier progression, the use of a via ferrata set, and the ability to climb on rocks. Finally, there are opportunities for almost all seasons: in both volumes, we find routes that cross the high-altitude Alpine Arc and ice, to be tackled in summer, as well as routes located in mountain groups closer to the Po Valley, thus visitable in late autumn or even during dry winters.
Diego Filippi, born in 1967, lives in Trento. An alpine guide and member of the Giorgio Graffer mountaineering school, where he participated in climbing courses as a young man. Since that course, he has never stopped climbing mountains. An expert of the Sarca valley, he published the Arco Walls guide for Versante Sud, now in its fourth edition. He has always loved exploring and visiting the mountains of South Tyrol in search of the best routes and ridges. He particularly loves the Tessa group and the Vedrette di Ries, where he has climbed many peaks.
Fabrizio Rattin, born in 1990, lives in Fiera di Primiero. A technical member of the Trentino alpine rescue and safety supervisor of A.I.NE.VA (Snow and Avalanche Association). An eclectic lover of mountain exploration in all its forms, he has opened many climbing routes on his home mountains such as Lagorai and Pale di San Martino. He loves to climb the most solitary and unknown peaks, especially in the Cimonega and Monti del Sole groups, and invent new ski mountaineering routes every winter.
