Best women's sport climbing shoes 2024

If climbing equipment includes specific types of gear for each discipline of the sport, climbing shoes are the most symbolic common denominator. To meet the needs of all climbers, each model is available in different versions: one of the most common variations is the "women's" or "low volume" version.

The main differences involve internal volume, which is reduced to better fit the female foot morphology, and rigidity, which is generally softer to ensure excellent control without tiring the legs and feet too much. Additionally, the sole is often offered in a "half-sole" version.

These adjustments compared to the standard model provide the same performance while being lighter in weight; for this reason, it's not entirely accurate to label them as "feminine" models. The Low Volume or Wmn shoes are generally also suitable for climbers with a slimmer morphology, possibly still growing, where the same height corresponds to a lower weight.

Finally, "wmn" shoes represent a softer version of their standard counterpart, making them a viable choice for any climber who wants to try a less structured model. For this reason, the term "low volume" may better describe this type of climbing shoe.

As we did in our previous article on the best climbing shoes for men, we have selected five models of "women's" sport climbing shoes to compare and highlight their respective strengths.

La Sportiva - Katana Laces Women's

The Katana shoes have become one of La Sportiva's iconic models, offered over the years in various versions and colors. Katana Laces were specifically designed for climbers who enjoy vertical or slightly overhanging routes. As mentioned earlier, Katana Laces Wmn are not exclusively intended for women; on the contrary, they are ideal for lighter climbers or anyone looking for a softer model than the classic Katana.

The Wmn version has some important differences from the "yellow and black" unisex model. It features a half-sole instead of a full-length sole, making the shoe softer and more flexible. Additionally, the heel has been redesigned based on the innovative Fury model, achieving excellent performance even during heel hooks. The precise lacing, a hallmark of La Sportiva’s "laces" models, gives a snug, comfortable fit. The toe remains very precise even on small footholds, and the suede inserts provide a soft feel during extended use. Katana Laces are perfect for intermediate and advanced climbers seeking both precision and comfort.

SCARPA Vapor S WMN

The Vapor S WMN is part of SCARPA's expansive Vapor line, which includes lace-up, velcro, full-sole, and half-sole models. The Vapor S Wmn is the latest version on the market, aimed at intermediate climbers who don’t need the most aggressive or downturned shoe. The downturn is present only at the big toe, providing a more relaxed fit compared to models with pronounced asymmetry along the entire arch of the foot.

The full sole features the Vibram XS Grip 2 compound, a softer alternative to the classic Vibram XS Edge. This, combined with reduced internal volume, makes these shoes ideal for female climbers. One of the most interesting features is the Nano Strap System, a hybrid closure system that allows you to adjust the shoe in three modes (Slipper, Fast, and Strong), ensuring the perfect fit. SCARPA Vapor S Wmn is ideal for intermediate climbers looking for a comfortable model that can be used in various situations.

Evolv Geshido Lace Women’s

The Geshido Lace by Evolv is a more rigid and high-performance model, designed for advanced climbers who need shoes that perform well, even on overhanging sport routes. The full sole, made of 4.2 mm Trax SAS rubber, offers exceptional grip on both rock and indoor surfaces. The sole’s support is enhanced by a 1.2 mm plastic midsole, essential for technical moves, and a tensioning system that runs from the heel to the toe, allowing you to transfer more power when standing on small holds.

The lace-up closure and Evolv's signature split tongue allow for quick and precise volume adjustments, while the leather upper ensures a comfortable fit. The Geshido by Evolv is a high-performance shoe for dedicated climbers who spend a lot of time climbing both outdoors and indoors.

Five Ten Niad VCS W

The Niad VCS W from Five Ten features a full sole and a synthetic upper, ensuring durability in both materials and shape. Thanks to their robust construction, these shoes are often used for multi-pitch routes. In addition to their rigidity and full sole, the presence of an extra midsole offers additional support during extended climbs.

The fit is comfortable, with a shape that is neither overly aggressive nor too asymmetrical. The Niad VCS Wmn meets the needs of climbers who prioritize comfort over performance, where stability and support take precedence over the sensitivity of a half-sole shoe. They are also well-suited for climbers with small feet and for beginner and intermediate climbers who spend time on crags and long routes.

Wild Climb Pantera Laser

The Wild Climb Pantera Laser shoes offer intermediate aggressiveness, combining all the essential elements needed for sport climbing. They excel particularly during the warmer months, thanks to their breathable materials that provide excellent ventilation. While Pantera Laser shoes perform best on vertical slabs, they are also exceptional on technical overhangs. The elastic microfiber wraps around the foot, offering a sense of stability and reliability for any climbing style.

The laces provide quick adjustments and closure, ensuring a comfortable fit. The Wild Climb Pantera Laser is an ideal choice for those transitioning to more aggressive shoes while maintaining a high level of comfort.
