Ski touring consists of ascending, descending, and exploring unmarked areas on skis, without any artificial transportation aid, and relying only on your strength. Ski touring is done in the backcountry and there are a lot of itineraries to choose from, depending on intensity, length, technical difficulty, and elevation gain. Skiers will pick their skiing route according to their experience and skills. Just like hiking, you can find circular routes (where you start and finish in the same place), traverses (where start and end are different, so you will have to plan your trip accordingly), and itineraries where you follow the same path on the way up and down.
The gear kit comprises a pair of touring skis, climbing skins, and, depending on the snow conditions, rampant bindings (special crampons to improve grip on iced snow). On technical routes, you might even need to wear crampons on your boots and walk your way up with the help of an ice ax.
You will also need ski touring boots, specifically designed with a clip-on system to improve mobility on the uphills, a helmet, and bindings.
Accessories such as sunglasses or ski goggles, a backpack (even better with an integrated airbag system), and gloves complete the set.
Generally speaking, the difference between downhill skiing and ski touring lies in gear weight: backcountry skiing requires lighter materials without compromising performance and reliability.
Backcountry skiing is done, by definition, in the backcountry: this means no designated tracks to follow but also more risks. This is why it’s a good idea to always carry a self-aid kit with you. The safety kit must include an avalanche transceiver, a shovel, and an avalanche probe. Always keep in mind that gear is not the only essential when venturing off-piste: knowing your way around mountains, orienteering yourself, being aware of weather conditions, and knowing what to do in case of emergencies is also crucial.
Self-awareness, experience, and the right gear are the ingredients for a successful adventure on the snow, avoiding unpleasant situations and keeping everyone safe.
