Petzl GriGri is a belay device for climbing with an assisted braking system. It is designed to facilitate belaying maneuvers and works equally well for belaying the lead climber and for top roping. It can be used on all dynamic single ropes on the market from 8.5 to 11 mm (optimized for ropes from 8.9 mm to 10.5 mm).
The belayer must always hold the rope from the braking side with the right hand. At the moment when, following a fall, the rope becomes taut, the cam of the GriGri rotates upwards and tightens against the outer wall of the belay device, preventing slipping and thus stopping the fall. The design allows for excellent control of the descent: one hand holds the rope while the other releases the cam using the handle on the left side. This handle, with its patented structure, allows for significant progressive unlocking.
