Description

Idea Montagna Classic Ski Mountaineering in Trentino Alto-Adige Vol. 1 – Western Valleys is a guide dedicated to classic ski mountaineering in one of the most diverse areas of the Alpine arch. From the Brenner Pass, the main crossing of all the Alps, the wide valleys of the Isarco and Adige develop southward, almost evenly dividing the territory of Trentino Alto-Adige. Although these two portions are similar in geographical extent, they differ profoundly in geology and morphology: to the west, ice dominates, with the large groups of Ortles-Cevedale and Adamello-Presanella, while to the east, rock prevails, with the vast and famous Dolomite area. This clear distinction gives rise to an extraordinary variety of landscapes, panoramas, mountains, and valleys, making the region particularly rich in climbing and ski mountaineering opportunities.

The first volume, dedicated to the Western Valleys, examines the western part of the territory starting from the border ridge and including the Sesvenna group, the great chain of the Venosta and Passiria Alps, and the small group of the Breonie di Ponente. In the central band, the vast groups of Ortles-Cevedale and Adamello-Presanella find space, while further south extend the Brenta Dolomites and the Gardesane Prealps. Peaks such as Palla Bianca, Monte Cevedale, and Cima Presanella emblematically represent this territory, characterized by high altitudes and large, significant glaciers, making it ideal for extensive and challenging spring excursions. The morphology of the Sarentino Mountains makes them particularly suitable for winter ski mountaineering, while in the harsh Brenta Group, the possibilities are more limited. Finally, on the Gardesane Prealps, descents that remain memorable for their direct view of Lake Garda find space.

The guide proposes a total of 123 classic routes distributed among the Sesvenna group, the Venosta Passiria Alps, the Tessa group, the Breonie di Ponente, the Sarentino group, the Ortles-Cevedale and Maddalene group, the Brenta group, Adamello-Presanella, and the Gardesane Prealps.
