Description

Idea Montagna "Ski Mountaineering in Val Visdende" is a ski mountaineering guide to Val Visdende, an extreme edge of Venetian mountains nestled between the Creste di Confine, the Dolomites themselves, and the Carnic Alps. The valley, famous more for its meadows and valley woods, is indeed unknown in its higher recesses, where the uninterrupted sequence of peaks merges with the sky now close to Austria and Europe. A vague taste of the East can be felt while observing the profiles of the Julian Alps shimmering to the east, only to fade towards the frozen giants of the Tauri to the north and the more famous Dolomites lined up to the south. A spectacle so vast and surprising that not many have had the fortune to appreciate it. All just a few kilometers from the heart of Cadore, from the busy road that connects Santo Stefano to the lively and frequented Sappada; just a handful of minutes from Comelico and the road to the nearby Val Pusteria, a step away from the green Carnia. An entire world of mountains, surprisingly condensed in their characteristic environments, emerges slightly to the side of the Piave, which is born right here and begins its troubled journey towards the Adriatic Sea. Among dolomitic rocks, towers, and spires, giants of pale, compact limestone and plateaus of volcanic granites, the geological evolution of the territory can be read simply by turning one’s gaze around the horizon; a precious opportunity for observation and discovery. Where the forests stop and the meadows begin or the gravel fields wedge between the peaks, everything seems perfectly balanced, despite the evident differences. A balance of shapes and colors, which disintegrates, dissolves, and mixes in the waters of the river itself, until the peace of the plain and the sea.
Val Visdende is also the valley of silences, abandoned as it is by the stable presence of man, it is a place where the mute dialogue between nature and the hiker can still be cultivated. As if by a mysterious enchantment, it seems that everyone has forgotten these places when elsewhere the door opened to tumultuous and often careless development, so much so that at altitude there are no tourist facilities, one cannot drive through the woods, there are no cable cars or ski slopes. The valley is still natural! Not only that: describing the possible ski mountaineering routes covers considerable distances (about twenty kilometers from east to west and ten from north to south). A sort of true mountain group, a wide and sufficiently extensive territory even for those who love to explore and change perspectives, environments, and scenarios.
Thus, here is the objective of this ski mountaineering guide: to tell, describe, document what can be found within the wonderful treasure of Val Visdende when the snow makes everything even more fascinating and radiant. A monographic, complete, and exhaustive guide to the ski mountaineering possibilities in the area, with the secondary aim, or good intention, of reintroducing the theme of enhancing and protecting the places with a truly concrete gesture. It is a beginning, a first step, but taken in the belief that these routes, with the beauty they offer, are worth more than a thousand words.
