Idea Montagna Marmolada e San Pellegrino mounteering guidebook: When talking about the Marmolada, one always thinks solely of the highest peak in the Dolomites and its glacier: in truth, there is no Mount Marmolada or Marmolada Summit, but Marmolada refers to the eponymous massif and the entire mountain group.

The Bocche Range is entirely different from the nearby Dolomite peaks it overlooks, belonging to a powerful outcrop of magmatic rocks and quartziferous porphyries resulting from ancient volcanic eruptions. The entire area offers numerous historical testimonies of great interest related to the Great War of 1915-18: a hundred years after the bloody events of the war, countless remains still exist today, telling the difficult moments of life and death in areas that now appear as small earthly paradises.

This guidebook focuses on the peaks that occupy the eastern slope of the Val di Fassa, namely much of the Marmolada Group, and the peaks of the Bocche Range. Climbs concerning the mountain groups of the western slope and the northern headwaters (Sella, Sassolungo, Catinaccio, and Latemar) are instead described in volume 90 Peaks in Val di Fiemme and Fassa. The information provided concerns the ascent routes to 70 mountain peaks, but considering the additional information provided on another 38 peaks near the main ones, the number of peaks involved in the book rises to a total of 108. Each peak is dedicated a card with a description of the route, ascent and total times and elevation gains, difficulty, necessary or recommended equipment, and anything else that may be useful for researching before climbing the peak. This information has been collected by the authors who have climbed all the peaks presented in the book and thanks to the help of passionate friends and collaborators who have provided valuable photographs to complete the work.

To the hiker who undertakes the routes between the valleys and peaks of the Marmolada Group and the Bocche Range, numerous opportunities arise to thoroughly explore these Dolomite areas, tackling generally moderate elevation gains and mostly well-marked and signposted trails.

This guide aims to be a resource for hikers who want to delve deeper into the routes on these mountains and a means to keep the use of trails and peaks alive in some cases little-known or almost forgotten. A small tribute to the Queen Marmolada and her court of peaks, in one of the most beautiful and historically rich natural environments in the Dolomites.
