Description

Idea Montagna Scialpinismo Classico in Trentino Alto-Adige Vol. 2 – Eastern Valleys is a guide dedicated to classic ski mountaineering in the eastern part of the region. From the Brenner Pass, the most important pass of the entire Alpine arc, the wide valleys of the Isarco and Adige develop southward, dividing Trentino Alto-Adige into two almost equivalent portions in geographical extension but profoundly different in geology and morphology. To the west, ice prevails, with the large groups of Ortles-Cevedale and Adamello-Presanella, while to the east, rock dominates, with the vast and famous Dolomite area. This contrast gives rise to a remarkable variety of landscapes, panoramas, mountains, and valleys, offering numerous possibilities for alpine and ski mountaineering ascents.

The second volume, dedicated to the Eastern Valleys, analyzes the eastern area of the territory starting from the border ridge and including the Breonie di Levante group and the Fundres Mountains, along with the Aurine and Pusteresi Alps. Moving slightly further south, in the central band, the wide area of the Dolomites of Fiemme and Fassa is considered, with the Pale di San Martino, up to the Dolomites of Braies and Sesto. Further south extends the long Lagorai Chain, flanked by the smaller groups of Pasubio and Carega. The variety of this territory is particularly marked: to the north, there are high-altitude glaciers that offer classic and memorable spring ski mountaineering routes, such as those leading to peaks like Gran Pilastro, Grosse Moseler, Picco dei Tre Signori, Monte Nevoso, and Monte Magro. In the central part, the Dolomite area, characterized by strong contrasts between high rock walls and deep gullies, represents an ideal terrain for steep skiing, while also offering numerous possibilities for classic ski mountaineering, which in these environments takes on a particularly evocative character, as in the ascents in the Marmolada group or in the Dolomites of Braies. The southern area, finally, dominated by the vast Lagorai Chain and the smaller groups of Carega and Pasubio, is specifically suited for winter ski mountaineering.

The guide collects a total of 71 classic itineraries distributed between the Breonie di Levante and the Fundres Mountains, the Aurine and Pusteresi Alps, the Dolomites of the Odle, Puez, and Braies, the Dolomites of Fiemme and Fassa with the Cima Bocche Chain, the Lagorai Chain with Cima d’Asta and the Pale di San Martino, as well as the groups of Pasubio, Carega, and the surrounding plateaus.
