Idea Montagna "Scialpinismo in Col Nudo-Cavallo" is a ski mountaineering guide on the Col Nudo and Cavallo Group, featuring all the main routes of the mountain range. It details 78 itineraries, along with numerous variants, both uphill and downhill, ranging from the most basic ski walks to very challenging excursions reserved for excellent ski mountaineers. Naturally, the book does not claim to be exhaustive as, fortunately, every hiker can always develop new lines of ascent and descent, thanks to the favorable orography of the area; these wonderful mountains are indeed well-suited to be interpreted by those who possess the right preparation and imagination to discover something new.
The work follows the historical booklet by Baccini, De Benedet, and Fradeloni, published in 1986, after a quarter of a century during which ski mountaineering in the area has significantly developed and gained considerable popularity. The guide, absolutely innovative for its time, was the first to reveal the beauties of a territory that seems made for skiing trips, moreover easily accessible from the plains of Veneto and Friuli. Today, things have changed quite a bit: more and more enthusiasts, from beginners to experts, are climbing the many peaks, and for several years, even international competitive events have been held, a sign that even the highest levels of this discipline appreciate and recognize its great beauty and severity. This has led to the need to revisit and integrate those sparse notes, the reports of the past, and the few images, in light of today's intense usage, the new and more efficient technical materials, as well as the changed environmental conditions. We cannot ignore that winters have become much less harsh and that snowfall (still quite abundant in the area) is followed by significant temperature fluctuations. Moreover, the expectations of enthusiasts have also changed, as they are increasingly prepared and curious, as well as numerous, in search of new proposals and variants, which they tackle with great ease. This work is the result of constant engagement with the group, which has taken us to nearly all the peaks and valleys over the years, often repeating outings to carefully assess their characteristics and the most important passages; it is also the result of a great passion for this discipline that allows one to fully experience the snowy mountain, accompanied by the physical and mental pleasure of venturing into unspoiled and delightful areas.
In drafting the reports, as updated and precise as possible, we have combined a photographic research that could technically describe the places, equally conveying all the delicate poetry and rugged severity; just a stone's throw from the great Dolomites, indeed, here one finds equally captivating scenery and perspectives, with the uniqueness of being just a step away from the Adriatic Sea. From the snow-covered ridges, the mirror of the sea emerges sparkling on the horizon line, in a warm embrace with our cities, towns, and valleys.
