Idea Montagna 'Ski mountaineering in Col Nudo-Cavallo' is a ski mountaineering guidebook on the Col Nudo-Cavallo group, with all the main routes in the mountain range. Seventy-eight itineraries are related, plus numerous variants, both uphill and downhill, ranging from the most elementary ski tours to very demanding excursions reserved for excellent ski mountaineers. Naturally, the book makes no claim to completeness, since, fortunately, any hiker can always develop new lines of ascent and descent, thanks to the favourable orography of the area; these marvellous mountains, in fact, lend themselves well to interpretation by those with the right preparation and imagination to discover something new.
The work follows the historic booklet by Baccini, De Benedet and Fradeloni, published in 1986, after a quarter of a century in which ski mountaineering in the area developed considerably and became widespread. The guide, which was absolutely innovative for its time, had the merit of being the first to unveil the beauties of an area that seems to have been made especially for ski tours, and moreover is very accessible from the Veneto and Friuli plains. Today, things have changed somewhat: more and more enthusiasts, from beginners to experts, climb the many peaks, and for some years there have even been international competitive events, a sign that even the highest levels of this discipline appreciate and recognise its great beauty and severity. Hence the need to resume and integrate those scanty notes, the reports of the past and the few images, in the light of today's intense frequentation, the new and more performing technical materials, as well as the changed environmental conditions. Indeed, we cannot overlook the fact that winters have become much less severe and snowfalls (always quite abundant in the area) followed by significant temperature swings. Not least, the expectations of enthusiasts have also changed, as they are increasingly well prepared and curious, as well as numerous, looking for new proposals and variants, which they tackle with great ease. This work is the fruit of constant frequentation of the group, which has taken us for years to almost all the peaks and valleys, often repeating the outings in order to carefully assess their characteristics and the most important passages; not less, it is the fruit of a great passion for this discipline that allows one to fully experience the snow-covered mountains, accompanied by the physical and mental pleasure of penetrating uncontaminated and delightful areas.
In addition to the reports, which were as up-to-date and punctual as possible, we combined photographic research that could technically describe the places, while equally conveying all their delicate poetry and rough severity; just a stone's throw from the great Dolomites, in fact, here we find equally captivating scenery and perspectives, with the uniqueness of being one step away from the Adriatic Sea. From the snowy ridges, the mirror of the sea emerges shimmering on the horizon line, in one warm embrace with our cities, towns and valleys.
