The company Petzl was founded by two speleologists, Fernand Petzl and Pierre Chevalier. Together, they brought numerous innovations to their discipline and to sport climbing. In 1968, they began producing the first descenders, and in 1975, the Petzl brand officially entered the market. The company, founded in France, has always focused on research, development, and innovation; it is thanks to Petzl that the GRIGRI, the first self-braking belay device, was invented in 1991. In 2014, new branches were opened in Spain and Germany.
