The fifth edition of Ossola Rock presents an important novelty, dividing into two distinct guides dedicated respectively to crags and long routes. The volume Versante Sud Ossola Rock Hohe Wände Vol.1, available here in German, represents the first of the two tomes dedicated to multipitch routes and covers the areas of Mottarone, Val Strona, lower Val d'Ossola, Macugnaga, the Antrona and Bognanco valleys, the lower Valle Antigorio, Val Divedro, and Sempione. The text has been completely rewritten from scratch and reorganized to ensure better usability, enriched with a new photographic collection to respond to international interest in the Ossola territory.
Among the numerous novelties are valley floor routes and high-altitude climbs, such as Rücn’Roll, in addition to the modern rediscovery of adventurous and isolated walls such as Fornalino and the Corni di Nibbio. The work also documents the routes located near Domodossola and the sectors in the Gole di Gondo. While this volume focuses on the mentioned areas, the second volume of the series will cover Val Cairasca, Alpe Veglia, Alpe Devero, the upper Valle Antigorio with Formazza, and Val Vigezzo.
The authors boast a deep mountaineering knowledge of the territory. Fabrizio Manoni, nicknamed Manetta, has been an alpine guide since 1986 with a curriculum that ranges from new routes on Shivling in the Himalayas to alpine-style ascents on Makalu, to solos in the Alps and Andes. A promoter of the concept of fluid speed, Manoni continues to reinterpret classical mountaineering in Ossola and is already co-author of several technical publications. Enrico Serino, a national instructor of free climbing with hundreds of ice climbs and 4000-meter peaks, has made long rock routes his chosen field. Residing between Sempione and Val Vigezzo to stay close to the Ossola mountains, Serino combines exploratory activity with writing, having published novels and specialist guides, including the volume dedicated to the crags of the same series.
